Completed the U.S. Army’s elite Ranger school in 1981 and graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School in 1982 while a cadet at Texas A&M University.
As a Distinguished Military Graduate of Texas A&M University, was commissioned into the U.S. Army Infantry as a Second Lieutenant in 1982.
Air Assault Infantry Platoon Leader, 101st Airborne Division, 1983-1984. Provided training and tactical deployment for 45 soldiers. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Air Assault Anti-Tank Company Executive Officer, 101st Airborne Division, 1984-1985. Responsible for the logistic support of 90 soldiers and 40 vehicles, and accountable for $15 million in equipment.
Promoted to First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1984 and assigned to the Air Assault School, 1985-1986. Coordinated and conducted training in air operations for some 10,000 soldiers per year.
Infantry Battalion Scout Platoon Leader, 1986-1987. Led 35 air assault scouts on operations. Awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
Promoted to Captain in the U.S. Army in 1987 and assigned as a Senior Ranger Instructor to the 6th Ranger Training Battalion, 1987-1989. Responsible for tactical and leadership training of around 500 Army Rangers per year.
Ranger Training Company Commander, 1989-1990. Coordinated and conducted training for some 1,000 Army Rangers per year. Awarded the Army Commendation Medal.
Long Range Surveillance Detachment Commander, South Korea, 1990-1991. Responsible for infiltrating paratroopers behind enemy lines for the 2nd Army Infantry Division. Awarded the Overseas Ribbon.
Headquarters Company Commander, South Korea, 1991-1992. Responsible for training over 300 soldiers, maintaining a fleet of more than 60 vehicles, and accounting for some $30 million in equipment. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal twice, in addition to the Army Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Overseas Ribbon.
Senior Army ROTC Instructor and Operations Officer, Notre Dame University, 1992-1994. Trained some 250 cadets, leading them to success at regional and national competitions. Awarded the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal.
Promoted to Major upon entering the U.S. Army Reserves in 1995.
